The word means &#8220;paved&#8221;; stones set so closely together the metal beneath nearly disappears, the surface becoming something closer to light than material. Each stone is locked in place by tiny beads of gold, cut by hand with a sharpened graver. To give a sense of scale: pav&#233; is often applied to stones between 1mm and 2mm wide. Under the lens, being a tenth of a millimeter off can render a piece unworkable. With every added stone, the room for error shrinks. A single mistake ripples quietly through everything that comes after.</p><p>Most jewelry houses, even prestigious ones, outsource stone setting to specialized workshops. There is a clear line between the person who designs and the person who sets - between the vision and the hands that realize it.</p><p>I went to Lisbon to blur that line. I want to own the entire process, from the first forming of the metal to the final seat of the stone. Not because it&#8217;s efficient (it isn&#8217;t, not even close!), but because there is something about stone setting that I didn&#8217;t expect: the total absorption of it. Under the microscope, with a graver in hand and a stone that needs to be exactly right, everything else disappears. It is one of the few things I&#8217;ve found that asks for your complete attention and rewards it completely.</p><p>The two instructors at GRS are among the best stone setters in the world, not as a figure of speech. One of them, Jonas, likes to say: <em>&#8220;Nothing is too small. You just have to zoom in more.&#8221;</em> It sounds simple until you&#8217;ve spent a week trying to prove it. Under the microscope, the work either holds or it doesn&#8217;t.</p><p>That standard is what I&#8217;m bringing back with me to my studio in Japan. I&#8217;m excited by the challenge and to keep developing this discipline for years to come.</p><p>The real work begins.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" We are trained to hunt for inefficiencies and to find the cleanest path from point A to point B. </p><p>But craft resists this logic.</p><p>I spent the start of 2026 in the mountains of Japan, a landscape of frozen farmland and slow walks along the river. With long stretches of days at the bench, I finally finished two floral pendants I began back in autumn: a platinum sakura set with a single Akoya pearl, and a sculpted gold flower.</p><p>These pieces demanded not just cumulative hours of labor, but months of distance between the first spark of an idea and its final form.</p><div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;gallery&quot;:{&quot;images&quot;:[{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/af43be91-a791-4008-8d49-6e54a14f8aa5_3512x4390.jpeg&quot;},{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/87c1b0b2-aece-4798-81ae-1b2262d978ab_3433x4291.jpeg&quot;}],&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;staticGalleryImage&quot;:{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/7d99d914-82ef-4ea9-bd61-46577c51844c_1456x720.png&quot;}},&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true}"></div><p>The platinum sakura, in particular, tested my resolve. Platinum is a paradoxical metal; it is incredibly durable and forgiving to wear, yet notoriously tough to finish. It resists polish, requiring a series of repetitive passes with a light hand rather than force.</p><p>In Japan, this relationship with material is captured in the concept of <em>Shokunin Kishitsu</em>, the craftsman&#8217;s spirit. It is a philosophy of total devotion and a lifelong pursuit of mastery where the artisan accepts that the material has its own will. Platinum doesn&#8217;t care about my deadlines and cranking out a dozen quick pendants doesn&#8217;t guarantee each will be better than the last. </p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!cyhE!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F504bfb58-01e0-46a2-a42c-63152c884fb8_1735x1152.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!cyhE!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F504bfb58-01e0-46a2-a42c-63152c884fb8_1735x1152.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!cyhE!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F504bfb58-01e0-46a2-a42c-63152c884fb8_1735x1152.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!cyhE!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F504bfb58-01e0-46a2-a42c-63152c884fb8_1735x1152.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!cyhE!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F504bfb58-01e0-46a2-a42c-63152c884fb8_1735x1152.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!cyhE!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F504bfb58-01e0-46a2-a42c-63152c884fb8_1735x1152.png" width="1735" height="1152" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/504bfb58-01e0-46a2-a42c-63152c884fb8_1735x1152.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1152,&quot;width&quot;:1735,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:2922063,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.blog.annehara.com/i/182826730?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F688d6ff9-cb2f-4d67-9017-59e318f881cc_2000x1414.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!cyhE!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F504bfb58-01e0-46a2-a42c-63152c884fb8_1735x1152.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!cyhE!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F504bfb58-01e0-46a2-a42c-63152c884fb8_1735x1152.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!cyhE!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F504bfb58-01e0-46a2-a42c-63152c884fb8_1735x1152.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!cyhE!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F504bfb58-01e0-46a2-a42c-63152c884fb8_1735x1152.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Building the pendant structure and seat for the pearl. The idea originated as a ring but changed soon after to a pendant.</figcaption></figure></div><p>This spirit isn&#8217;t unique to the jewelry bench; I see it often in Japan, from the way a chef prepares a single piece of sashimi to the way a neighbor cleans their portion of the sidewalk.</p><p>Completing these pieces and even feeling a bit of frustration in how long they took made something click. Craft asks for a perspective that stands in total opposition to the worlds of finance and tech I come from.</p><p>For a long time, optimization shaped how I moved through work. Ideas were meant to be tested quickly, validated or discarded just as fast.</p><p>I carried that mindset to the bench without realizing it. In the beginning, I measured my skill by how much I finished rather than how much I understood. I mistook movement for momentum.</p><p>When you are learning to make something with your hands, optimization often works against you. Mastery doesn&#8217;t come through acceleration, but through repetition. Through returning to the same form again and again with slightly better eyes.</p><p>I recently read an <a href="https://archeronline.substack.com/p/the-importance-of-craft-in-the-21st">essay</a> that resonated with me about the importance of craft in the 21st century. An excerpt reads:</p><blockquote><p>&#8220;If we wish to contribute to humanity through our vocation, we need to be willing to slow down, revise, and re-attempt&#8230;<em> </em>What we are making is also making us. Mastering one&#8217;s craft is to master one&#8217;s own nature.&#8221;</p></blockquote><p>In my life in finance and tech, we optimized to remove the &#8220;friction&#8221; of human error. But in craft, friction is where the spirit enters<strong>.</strong> The <em>Shokunin</em> ethos doesn&#8217;t look for the fastest path; it looks for the path that honors the material and the best work the maker can create today. </p><p>Shifting from a mindset of efficiency to a mindset of reverence is the most difficult tool I&#8217;ve had to learn to use.</p><div I carved many wax iterations before landing on this version, and I find myself wanting to carve many more to create a full metal bouquet. I finished the interior of the petals with a soft, matte texture to catch the light, contrasting it with a mirror polish on the exterior. On the petals, I chose not to refine too far and left some irregularities.
